Competitive Priorities and Capabilities

Competitive Capabilities

Competitive priorities are the critical operational dimensions a process or supply chain must posses to satisfy internal or external customers.

QUALITY
The quality of the metal is perhaps the most important factor to the business. If the quality isn't good, other buyers aren't going to want it.  If the customer isn't satisfied with the quality, Sims loses money and time sending an employee out to inspect the metal. This is costly and takes time considering most of the places aren't in this country. If the inspector finds the metal is not up to standard high-quality, Sims Metal Management gives the customer a price reduction and they lose money. This reflects Sims quality decision of having both top and consistent quality.

TIME
Time is an important factor to Sims Metal Management due to the fact that most of their business is to other countries. Sims uses an on-time delivery strategy which promises the consumer they will meet their delivery time. Another reason time is important is that when the metal is purchased, it is reprocessed at the site. Sims resells this metal to other countries. If action isn't taken at the right time, Sims Metal Management could potentially lose money. Metal is bought on the market system and inventory on the ground is a potential loss if the market price drops.

COST
Sims uses a low cost strategy. All machinery is kept in top shape with daily inspections and self-performed maintenance. Another way Sims saves money is buying supplies for the facilities in bulk. Payroll is also watched very closely. In the winter, business naturally slows down. Reducing overtime payroll will increase company profits. Sims also outsources a large portion of their shipping to cut costs in both operations and employment. All aspects of the business is used to refurbish cost such as selling plastics gathered from light iron.

FLEXIBILITY
Sims functions daily in continuous flow with multiple commodities yet they do customize orders. In example, Noble Street ships a load on #1 HMS to a Sayreville yard every other week to fulfill an order. Otherwise, everything bought at Noble Street automatically gets shipped to a bigger Sims yard.
